Patchanka.

A 10x10 variant built almost entirely out of compound pieces. The three oblique leapers - Knight, Camel and Giraffe - are paired up into the Wildebeest, the Okapi and the Bison; the Kirin and the Phoenix come from Chu Shogi; and the Badger and the Ram extend them into slider/leaper compounds, which is why a Kirin promotes to a Badger and a Phoenix to a Ram. The Soldier, an augmented Pawn that also steps sideways and keeps its double step everywhere on the board, supports the front line. The strongest piece, the Medusa, is not on the board at the start: it appears only when a Pawn or a Soldier reaches the last rank.
